1940’s to 1960’s – The Restoration and Rehabilitation of Irish People’s teeth in a Young Independent Nation
Dr. Gerald H. Owens (Gerry) 1914-1997 started the Practice at number 40 Fitzwilliam Square in the 1940’s and continued working for 45 years. He was dually qualified, both in Medicine and Dentistry, but mainly practiced Dentistry. He held a position of Oral Surgeon in the Meath Hospital in the early days of Haemophilia Treatment.
Gerry’s brother Jack was Dean of Dublin Dental Hospital and his half-brother Tom also practised Dentistry in Clare Street. Gerry was a very accomplished golfer and won The Irish Close Championship in 1939 at Rosses Point. He played International Golf before and after the War. He was also an International selector and a non-playing Captain in subsequent years. He was President of the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1970 and Captain of Skerries Golf Club on three occasions. He remained very good friends with the Irish Golfing greats of that era, such as Joe Carr and Cecil Ewing.
He also sailed, mainly in the National 18’s fleet from Skerries Sailing Club and competed in the UK at Cowes.
Gerry had two children by his first wife Noel, who passed away at 37 years of age. He then had five children with his second wife Mary. His eldest son Gerry Owens (jnr.) joined his father in the Practice in the late 1960’s.
1970’s to 1990’s – The Revolution in Dental Materials, Dental Implantology and the growth of Cosmetic Dentistry worldwide
As Gerry Owens Snr. was retiring, his son Gerry Jnr. transferred the Practice from Fitzwilliam Square to its current location at Ailesbury road in 1974. This was set up as a modern Dental Surgery and employed a Dental Hygienist and three Dental Nurses. At that time Dental Hygienists were not recognised or registered, which shows how times have changed!
Gerry graduated from Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and the Dublin Dental Hospital in 1969.
His teenage years were spent playing school sports and sailing, which became his passion. He sailed from Skerries in Junior Class and from Dunlaoghaire in the Dragon Class. He won two National Championships. He also plays Golf.
Gerry is married to Nora and has five grown up children. Gerry’s youngest son Gerald sailed in three Olympics, 2004 Athens, 2008 Beijing and 2012 London in the 470 Class.
Gerry has always enjoyed his Profession and attends many postgraduate courses at home and abroad. He is a past President of the Metropolitan Branch of the Irish Dental Association. He obtained his membership in General Dental Surgery (MGDS) in 1989. He still maintains a deep interest in up-to-date techniques, especially with restorative, implant and cosmetic dental procedures.
2000 onwards – Diagnostic Advancements, Digitally-Assisted Dentistry and beyond….
Roger – Gerry’s second eldest son, joined his Father in the Practice in 2003 and together they continue the family Dental tradition at Ailesbury Dental Practice. Roger has experience as a Senior House Officer in Oral Surgery in Wales and supervised on the Paedodontics Clinics at the Dublin Dental Hospital. He has completed postgraduate studies at Trinity College Dublin and Warwick University in the UK. He received his Masters in Dental Implantology in 2012.
Roger plays golf, enjoys hillwalking and sea swimming. He has successfully hiked Mt. Kilimanjaro 2003, Base Camp Everest 2006 and more recently the Corsican GR20 route in 2018. He previously enjoyed Marathon running and Triathlon events.
Roger is married to Cristina (who’s father Gerry Meehan was also a very accomplished Dentist in Galway) and they have three young children.
